Chat With A Host

Tofino

For many families in Campbell River, the decision to host an international student starts with a desire to share the beauty of our backyard with the world. But as our host parents quickly discover, the experience is less about playing "tour guide" and more about building a bridge between cultures, one campfire and game night at a time.

We sat down with a local host parent to talk about her family’s journey, their epic island adventures, and why Campbell River is the ultimate place to learn and live for students and families alike.

What inspired your family to become a host parent?

"We love hosting and welcoming people to our home! We actually hosted international students back in Castlegar about ten years ago, so the idea wasn't new to us. Now that my kids are older, they are essentially peers with the students we host. It creates a really fun, fresh dynamic at home to have another 'big kid' as part of the family circle."

You’ve taken some incredible trips with your student. What stands out?

"A couple of trips really come to mind! In October, we took Ben to San Josef Bay for Thanksgiving. It was such a special experience to hike in, camp together, and play on the beach for a few days without another person in sight. We spent our time having campfires, watching the tide, and hiking the bluffs.

We also did a winter day trip to Tofino and Ucluelet in January. We packed the day with hiking trails and exploring. The highlight was definitely swimming at Long Beach and cooking supper on a camp stove while we watched the sunset. It’s those simple, outdoor moments that really stick with you."

How has hosting changed your family’s daily life?

"Every student brings a totally different energy. There have been times when we play games together every single night after dinner, and other times when the students have busy social schedules of their own. We believe there is great value in serving others, and opening our home is a way we can do that every day. Plus, it is so much fun to watch my own kids make friends with people from all around the world!"

From your perspective, what makes Campbell River such a special place for these students?

"Campbell River is unique because it’s quieter than a big city, but it has absolutely everything you need. It is gorgeous here, you have the coastal mountain views to the east and Strathcona Park to the west. If you enjoy being outdoors, you are literally surrounded by adventure opportunities at all times."
