Celebrating Indigenous Student Excellence: Students Making a Difference Events

In recognition and appreciation, schools across our district are honouring the achievements and contributions of 152 Indigenous students. This cherished annual tradition, known as “Students Making a Difference,” shines a spotlight on the remarkable accomplishments, community spirit, and resilience of Indigenous youth.

At the heart of these events lies the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the efforts of Indigenous students who go above and beyond in various aspects of their lives. From academic and athletic achievements to language and culture participation and leadership roles within their schools and communities, these students exemplify dedication in all they do.

The selection process includes criteria ranging from academic and sports performance to cultural participation and environmental stewardship. Students who show exceptional leadership, personal growth, or a strong commitment to their school community are chosen by school staff in collaboration with the district’s Indigenous Education team.

Schools come up with their own unique events, such as special assemblies or cupcake celebrations, as a few examples. While the events may look slightly different the intent is the same and each student is presented with a certificate, a book to nurture their love for learning, and a gift card to support a celebratory family meal – a small token of appreciation for their contributions.

As an example of one of this year’s events, École Phoenix hosted a special lunch on March 6 to celebrate their recognized students and their families. This intimate gathering gave an opportunity for students and their loved ones to come together in celebration as each student was called upon to receive their well-deserved accolades presented by their teacher nominator.

To all the Indigenous students who continue to make a positive difference in our schools and beyond, congratulations! We lift our hands to you in celebration and with gratitude.
